The MDC is an internationally renowned biomedical research center in Berlin. The MDC aims to understand the molecular basis of health and disease and to translate findings as quickly as possible into clinical applications. The ultimate goals are better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Over 360 PhD students and around 230 postdocs are currently engaged in research in about 80 research groups. To promote clinical translation from bench to bedside, an increasing number of researchers from the MDC are working with physicians within the Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC), which acts as an interface between the Charité and MDC.

PhD students will receive an employment contract with the MDC. Salaries are competitive to national standards and employees receive an additional end of the year payment. The contract includes health and social insurance as well as a pension scheme. Employees are entitled to 30 holidays per year in addition to public holidays. In many cases, contracts are extended for an additional year. The monthly minimum gross salary of an EMERALD fellow currently is 4187,45 € (equalling a yearly minimum gross salary of 52.761,87 €, 12 monthly payments + annual bonus payment in November each year).

Research at the MDC aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of health and disease, and translates those findings into medical practice. The research areas of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease, Cancer Research, Diseases of the Nervous System, and Medical Systems Biology pursue core activities pursued, and they are complemented in cooperation with twelve clinical research groups of the Experimental Clinical Research Centre (ECRC).

MDC and the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin establishes the Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC). The ECRC integrates clinicians and translational researchers with the research-driven environment of the MDC. It aims to strengthen interdisciplinary activities as well as to shorten the pathway from discovery to clinical applications.

The MDC International PhD Program provides structured training for biomedical research in Berlin, with close supervision, interdisciplinary scientific expertise, and a range of transferable skills opportunities. MDC supports a highly diverse community of 350 ESRs, 65% of which are coming from abroad. The International PhD Program has been established in 2007 in collaboration with Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and it is since then openly recruiting Phd candidates twice a year.

The Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine is an internationally renowned biomedical research centre in Berlin. The Campus Berlin-Buch is the largest Biotech Campus in Berlin: more than 50 research institutions and biotech companies are based here, near hospitals. Our research building for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) is in Berlin’s Mitte district close to Humboldt Universität and Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The MDC aspires to provide all employees with an attractive work environment through an outstanding infrastructure and through collaboration with leading researchers, but also by being a place where tolerance, respect, and good interpersonal relations are paramount.

Frequent and radical changes through Berlin’s present history have transformed the face of the city many times over. Despite this, the city has developed into a thriving metropolis, with a population of 3.7 million people including 750 000 residents of foreign nationality and almost 200 000 university students. Berlin boasts a lively scene with lots of pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafés. Densely urban areas coexist with large green spaces, nature reserves, lakes and rivers, all within the city boundaries, offering a truly metropolitan lifestyle.
