BRIC is a centre of excellence in biomedical research, with 300 employees working in 26 research groups. The work environment is open, collaborative and international with around 65% of the researchers having an international background. The daily language is English. Our primary goals are to perform cutting-edge basic research, to translate our research into value for the society and to provide excellent research training of young researchers. BRIC's scientific goals are to contribute to the understanding of how and why disease occurs, to discover new disease-related genes, and support generation of new efficient treatments. The centre is located in modern buildings with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

The EMERALD fellows will obtain a total of 42 months of employment: 6 months as research assistant plus 36 months as PhD student. The University of Copenhagen will be the hiring institution, with BRIC as the daily workplace. The EMERALD fellows will receive a competitive salary of  28,365.85 DKK (approx. 3,810.09 EUR).

The centre is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaborations across medical, biomedical and biological disciplines. Also, BRIC has strong ties to Capital Region university hospital departments through double affiliation of BRIC group leaders with a clinical department, thematic work programmes and collaborative projects.

The trainee will enrol in the PhD programme Molecular Mechansisms of Disease (MoMeD), which comprises around 150 students across 10 different departments, hereof 55-60 at BRIC. The environment is very international, as 75% of the PhD students at BRIC has an international background. MoMeD offers several scientific and technical courses, as well as transferable seminars and career development activities. All supervisors have mandatory supervision training. MoMeD is part of the Health and Medical Science Faculty’s Graduate School, counting 1600 PhD-students, and gives access to a high number of workshops and other activities for all students.

BRIC’s primary goal is to perform cutting-edge basic research in an open and diverse environment that fosters interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Accordingly, the institute has a flat structure, and the BRIC’s work culture offers several opportunities to interact across the centre, such as shared seminars, peer-feedback, peer-mentoring and co-creation and idea-sessions. BRIC also has an active student and postdoc association that offers both scientific and social activities.

Copenhagen is in the heart of the ‘medicon valley’, attracting a high number of internationals to the universities, biotech and pharma industry. At BRIC, more than 65% of the researchers are internationals and the University of Copenhagen has an International Staff Mobility Office, helping with the transitioning to Denmark is issues such as tax system, health system, day-care and schools and spouse programme, among others.
